Abstract
Scrutinizing the representation of violence in fiction reflects the various degrees of sensitivity to the perception of violence. This perception is strongly influenced by gender issues in a violent patriarchal system of social organization. This essay discusses the tie manhood-violence and how men writers deal with their gendered role, while identifying cases of perverted visibility, omission and invisibility of violence against women. The second part deals with how women writers depict or confront violence in their stories. Two taboos on the perception of violence and gender are identified.
