Violence & Gender. We See What We Believe In. Tracking Taboos.
michelle renyé
Conclusion
§25. Recent developments around the rejection of violence in society are creating the need to seek other grounds for new values and relationships. This cannot be done without stating the reality of violence and gender, exposing the visible and the invisible. What we find at present is whereas men writers criticizing violence seem to be unable to reach the bottom layer of misogynous violence in male domination, women writers criticizing violence have actually done so, but their points confront a cultural mistrust of women. Thus, in the depiction of violence we find two taboos, related to unacknowledged silences by men and words by women that are misunderstood. This misperception is gendered and traceable. Women's analysis of violence needs to be understood, and men need to move deep into their questioning of violence. Progress towards the eradication of machista gender roles is unquestionable, but obstacles are deeply rooted. Making them visible is crucial, not only for the sake of exposure but also to avoid confusion in the analysis. Fortunately, this is just the beginning.
